What exactly is Chrome Education Upgrade (CEU)?
Chrome Education Upgrade is a perpetual per-device management licence from Google. It unlocks the device management capabilities of Google Admin Console for that specific Chromebook. Without CEU, a Chromebook is a personal consumer device. With CEU, it becomes an institution-managed device that your IT administrator can control remotely — pushing apps, enforcing policies, remote-wiping and tracking device status.
Is CEU a one-time cost or an annual subscription?
CEU is a perpetual licence — you pay once for each device, and that licence covers the device for its entire life. There is no annual renewal. This is one of the most cost-effective aspects of the Chromebook for education model: you purchase CEU once when you buy the Chromebook, and you never pay for it again regardless of how many years the device is in use.
Do I need CEU if I already have Google Workspace for Education?
Yes — these are separate licences for different things. Google Workspace for Education licences users (students and teachers) and gives them access to Classroom, Gmail, Meet and Drive. CEU licences devices (Chromebooks) and gives your IT admin the ability to manage those devices from Admin Console. You need both for a fully managed school environment.
Can I manage ChromeOS Flex devices with CEU?
Yes. ChromeOS Flex devices (old Windows or Mac hardware running ChromeOS Flex) can be enrolled and managed with Chrome Education Upgrade just like physical Chromebooks. The same policies, app management and remote-wipe capabilities apply. CEU for ChromeOS Flex devices is the same licence as for physical Chromebooks.
What is Zero Touch Enrollment and does it require CEU?
Zero Touch Enrollment (ZTE) is a feature that allows Chromebooks to automatically enroll in your school's Admin Console on first boot — without any IT staff touching the device. When a student turns on the Chromebook for the first time and connects to Wi-Fi, it automatically downloads your school's configuration, apps and policies. ZTE requires a Chrome Education Upgrade licence on the device.
If a student leaves the school, what happens to the CEU licence?
CEU is a device licence, not a user licence. When a student leaves, you unenroll their user account from Workspace for Education. The Chromebook (with its CEU licence) remains enrolled in Admin Console and can be reassigned to a new student immediately — no new CEU purchase needed. The device licence persists indefinitely.
