What is the difference between Chrome Education Upgrade (CEU) and Google Workspace for Education?
CEU is a per-device licence that allows you to manage a Chromebook through Google Admin Console — it controls the hardware. Google Workspace for Education is a per-user licence that gives students and teachers access to Classroom, Gmail, Meet and Drive — it controls the user account. You can have one without the other, but you need both to run a fully managed Chromebook environment for your school.
Does every school need Google AI Pro for Education, or is Gemini already included?
Basic Gemini features are included in the Teaching & Learning Upgrade and Education Plus Workspace tiers. Google AI Pro for Education is a separate add-on that brings the full Gemini suite (including NotebookLM and Guided Learning) to schools on any Workspace tier — including Fundamentals. Schools that want AI across all users regardless of Workspace tier should consider AI Pro.
Is Chrome Education Upgrade a one-time purchase or a subscription?
Chrome Education Upgrade is a perpetual per-device licence — you pay once and it covers that Chromebook device permanently, with no annual renewal. This makes it very cost-effective for schools buying devices that will last 5 or more years.
Can schools use Chromebook Plus without Chrome Education Upgrade?
Yes — Chromebook Plus devices work as consumer devices without CEU. However, without CEU, the school cannot manage the device through Google Admin Console, cannot push apps, cannot enforce policies, and cannot remote-wipe the device. For institutional deployment, CEU is strongly recommended.
What is ChromeOS Flex and can schools use it instead of buying new Chromebooks?
ChromeOS Flex is a free operating system from Google that converts existing Windows laptops and Macs into ChromeOS devices. It is a good option for schools with recent (post-2015) hardware that want to extend device life. ChromeOS Flex devices can also be managed with Chrome Education Upgrade, just like new Chromebooks.
Does Google Admin Console come free with Workspace for Education?
Yes — the Google Admin Console for managing user accounts is included with every Google Workspace for Education plan, including the free Fundamentals tier. The Admin Console can also manage Chromebook devices, but only if those devices have a Chrome Education Upgrade licence applied.
Who is eligible for Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals at no cost?
Eligible institutions include accredited CBSE, ICSE and state board K-12 schools, UGC-recognised degree-granting colleges and universities, government schools, and recognised nonprofit educational organisations. For-profit coaching institutes and test-prep centres are not eligible for the free tier but can subscribe to paid Education tiers.
How long does Google for Education setup take from start to finish?
