The Core Difference

Your Email Provider Reads Your Email. Proton Cannot.

Google and Microsoft can technically read every email in your inbox. They use this access for ad targeting, compliance with government data requests, and building user profiles. Proton Mail is architecturally different — your email is encrypted on your device before it leaves, using cryptographic keys only you hold. Proton's servers store only encrypted ciphertext. No key. No access. No exceptions.

Gmail / Outlook
  • Email stored unencrypted on vendor servers
  • Vendor can read your email
  • Subject to US CLOUD Act requests
  • Ad profiling from email content
  • Law enforcement access via court order
Proton Mail
  • Email encrypted before leaving your device
  • Proton cannot read your email — ever
  • Swiss law — strongest privacy globally
  • No ads. No profiling. No data mining.
  • Even under legal order: only ciphertext

End-to-End Encryption

All messages are encrypted using OpenPGP with keys generated on your device. Messages are decrypted locally — Proton's servers never see plaintext.

Zero-Access Architecture

Stored emails are encrypted with your public key. Only your private key (which never leaves your device) can decrypt them. Proton has no technical means to access your data.

Swiss Privacy Law (FADP)

Proton operates under Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection — stricter than GDPR. Switzerland is not subject to US CLOUD Act, EU data-sharing agreements, or Indian data access requests.

Password-Protected Emails

Send encrypted emails to non-Proton users with a password. The recipient receives a link and must enter the password to decrypt and read the message.

Open Source & Audited

Proton Mail is fully open source — apps and cryptographic libraries are publicly audited by independent security firms. The encryption claims are verifiable, not a marketing promise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Proton Mail uses end-to-end encryption with a zero-access architecture — your emails are encrypted on your device before they leave, using your own private key. Proton's servers only ever hold encrypted data. Even Proton's own staff cannot read your email. This is fundamentally different from Gmail and Outlook, where Google and Microsoft can technically access your email content for ads, compliance, or law enforcement requests.

Zero-access encryption means the service provider has zero ability to access your data, even if compelled by a court. Your data is encrypted with keys only you hold. With Proton Mail, even if Swiss authorities ordered Proton to hand over email data, Proton can only provide encrypted data that is mathematically unreadable without your private key.

Yes. Proton Mail for Business supports custom domains (e.g. yourname@yourcompany.com). You add your domain to Proton, update your MX records to point to Proton's mail servers, and configure SPF/DKIM/DMARC for proper email authentication. Cloudfy handles all of this as part of the onboarding process.

Proton Mail is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland — governed by Swiss FADP (Federal Act on Data Protection), which provides privacy protections stronger than GDPR. Switzerland is recognised by the EU as providing adequate data protection. For Indian businesses under the DPDP Act (Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023), Proton Mail's zero-access architecture ensures that no third party — including Proton — can access personal data stored in email.

Yes. Proton provides migration tools for moving from Gmail, Google Workspace, and Microsoft 365 to Proton Mail. Historical email is imported and encrypted on arrival. Cloudfy manages the migration — MX record cutover, contact and calendar migration, and user onboarding — with minimal disruption to your team.

Proton Mail for Business is priced per user per month (billed annually). Pricing varies by plan (Mail Essentials, Business, Enterprise) and user count. Contact Cloudfy Systems for an exact INR quote with GST invoice — we provide India-specific pricing and handle the complete setup.
