Google Meet vs Microsoft Teams India — Video Conferencing Comparison 2026

Google Meet vs Microsoft Teams India — Video Conferencing Comparison 2026

Google Meet and Microsoft Teams are the two dominant video conferencing and collaboration platforms for Indian businesses. Both are bundled with their parent productivity suites — Meet with Google Workspace, Teams with Microsoft 365. For most Indian organisations, the video platform choice follows the productivity suite choice. But the comparison matters for organisations evaluating their platform, or those running a mixed environment.

The Core Context

Google Meet is Google's video conferencing tool, included in all Google Workspace plans. It is a focused video meeting application — clean interface, fast joining, minimal setup.

Microsoft Teams is Microsoft's collaboration hub — a combination of persistent chat (like Slack), video meetings, file sharing, and app integrations. Teams is included in all Microsoft 365 Business and Enterprise plans.

The two products are not direct equivalents. Meet is a video meeting tool; Teams is a broader collaboration platform that includes video meetings as one component.

Participant Limits

PlanGoogle MeetMicrosoft Teams
Entry paid plan100 (Business Starter)300 (Business Basic)
Mid plan150 (Business Standard)300 (Business Standard)
Upper mid plan500 (Business Plus)300 (Business Premium)
Enterprise1,0001,000 (Teams Premium)

Teams gives more participants at the entry price point (300 vs 100 for the lowest paid tier).

Meeting Duration

Both platforms have unlimited meeting duration on paid plans. The Google Meet free plan has a 60-minute cap for group meetings; Teams free plan also has similar caps. On any paid plan, both are unlimited.

Recording

Both platforms record meetings to cloud storage:

  • Google Meet: Recordings saved to the meeting organiser's Google Drive. Available from Business Starter upward.
  • Microsoft Teams: Recordings saved to OneDrive or SharePoint. Available across M365 plans (recording policies controlled by admin).

Transcript: Google Meet automatically generates transcripts from Business Plus upward. Teams generates live captions and meeting transcripts from Business Basic upward (all paid plans).

Verdict: Teams has transcripts at a lower price point. Meet transcripts require Business Plus (~₹1,260/user/month).

Breakout Rooms

Both platforms support breakout rooms:

  • Google Meet: From Business Standard (~₹672/user/month) upward
  • Microsoft Teams: Available across all paid plans

Noise Cancellation

Both include AI-based noise cancellation. Microsoft Teams' noise suppression is considered slightly stronger in independent user reviews, but both are effective in typical Indian office environments.

Background Effects

Both support virtual backgrounds and background blur. Google Meet's background blur is available even on the free plan and performs well. Teams' background effects are comparable.

Chat and Collaboration

This is where the two platforms diverge significantly.

Google Meet: Meet is meeting-only. There is no persistent in-app chat outside of the meeting window. For team messaging, Google Workspace uses Google Chat (a separate app, included in Workspace).

Microsoft Teams: Teams combines persistent chat channels, group messaging, 1:1 chats, file sharing, and video meetings in a single application. This is Teams' core differentiation — it is a collaboration hub, not just a video tool.

Indian organisations that want Slack-style persistent team chat plus video meetings in one app will find Teams more integrated. Teams chat history, files, and meetings are all linked — you can start a video call directly from a chat thread.

Verdict: Teams for organisations that want chat + meetings in one platform. Meet for organisations that prefer dedicated apps (Google Chat for messaging, Google Meet for video).

Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace Integration

This is the most important practical consideration for Indian businesses:

On Microsoft 365: Teams is deeply integrated — Calendar invites open in Teams, Office documents edited collaboratively in Teams, SharePoint files accessible from Teams, Outlook calendar sync native. Teams is the hub for M365.

On Google Workspace: Meet is similarly integrated — Google Calendar invites create Meet links automatically, Meet recordings go to Drive, Google Chat and Meet are linked in the same interface.

The practical rule: If your organisation is on Microsoft 365, Teams is the natural choice and is already licensed. If your organisation is on Google Workspace, Meet is the natural choice and is already licensed. Buying the other vendor's video tool on top of your existing suite is redundant cost.

Pricing Comparison for India

For Indian organisations comparing total cost of the productivity suite + meetings:

Google Workspace with Meet:

PlanPrice/User/MonthMeet Participants
Business Starter~₹125100
Business Standard~₹672150
Business Plus~₹1,260500

Microsoft 365 with Teams:

PlanPrice/User/MonthTeams Participants
Business Basic~₹125300
Business Standard~₹750300
Business Premium~₹1,850300

At the entry price point (both ~₹125/user/month), Teams gives 300 participants vs Meet's 100. At mid-tier, pricing is comparable but Teams' 300-participant cap versus Meet's 150 is a consideration for organisations that run larger meetings.

For features like transcripts, Teams delivers them at a lower price point than Meet. For a higher participant ceiling (500+), Meet requires Business Plus while Teams requires Teams Premium add-on.

Admin and IT Management

Google Meet Admin Controls:

  • Managed from Google Admin Console
  • Policies: who can start meetings, recording permissions, external participant permissions, who can join meetings before the organiser
  • Integration with Google Workspace's broader admin framework
  • Simpler: IT admins familiar with Google Admin find Meet policies straightforward

Microsoft Teams Admin Controls:

  • Managed from Teams Admin Center and Microsoft 365 Admin Center
  • More granular meeting policies: lobby bypass, recording policies, background options, noise suppression level
  • Complex but powerful — suitable for large enterprises with specific compliance requirements
  • Integration with Conditional Access (Entra ID) for security policy enforcement

Verdict: Teams admin is more powerful but more complex. Meet admin is simpler for organisations without dedicated IT security teams.

Webinar Capability

Google Meet: Standard meetings up to 1,000 participants (Enterprise). No dedicated webinar product in Meet itself; Google Workspace offers Google Workspace add-ons for webinar-style events.

Microsoft Teams Webinars: Teams includes a dedicated webinar mode — registration pages, attendee reporting, green room for presenters. Available from Business Basic upward.

Microsoft Teams Town Halls: Replacing Teams Live Events, Town Halls supports up to 10,000 attendees for internal organisation broadcasts.

Verdict: Teams has a more structured webinar and town hall capability built-in. Meet requires higher Enterprise tiers for equivalent large-format event capability.
